In this 2-part interview, I chatted with El from Let’s Talk About X. They partner with organisations to embed a culture of deep respect, clear communication, and lasting psychological safety. In this first part, we discuss how the business began, the topic of consent, and the importance of practising effective communication and boundaries.

There’s a lot in common between social enterprises and small businesses. Here’s what small businesses can learn from El and Let’s Talk About X from a business standpoint:
A smaller operation allows for the ability to fill a more specific gap in the market. El’s background in teaching, which led them to Let’s Talk About X, is a good example of building on what you know, identifying a specific gap in the market, and getting started from there.
When pivoting to bring more financial stability, it’s not about throwing everything into it, including the kitchen sink, but about thinking about what can be a win-win-win situation where everyone along the stakeholder line can find benefit in getting involved. Smaller operations often get lost in survival mode, and so often, one wrong move can alienate existing customers and make them worse off.
Communication is a form of business asset, particularly for smaller operations. A couple of ideas, like: What’s your focal point? What do you know about what your clients want? What do they not know that you can help with? Factor these into the business plan and 6-monthly reviews can help you with focus and make decisions.
