Welcome to this 4-part miniseries with broadcaster, author, and LGBT+ chronicler, William Brougham. This was originally planned as the 2nd episode of the 2026 #GetChatty podcast about the new book Stan Munro: Secrets of a Showbiz Dame, but it certainly deserves its own playlist in addition to being part of Series 2026!

We welcome a new guest to the pod, William Brougham, a journalist, broadcaster, writer, and LGBT+ chronicler. He shares his journey from London to Sydney, his background in journalism and radio, and the early experiences that shaped his creative life. From a childhood sense that Australia was “home” long before he arrived, to nearly two decades in community radio, this conversation sets stage for our 4‑part miniseries exploring queer history, storytelling, and lived experience.

In this part of the mini series, we shone a spotlight on the book and why this production worked. Not only did we get a fantastic reading of a segment by William, but we also talked about the magic of asking the right question.
LGBT+ history deserves care, respect, and intention; and for an interview to work, to successfully chronicle a story from one’s memory, then research, preparation, and proper engagement (instead of going through the motions, working down a list), is extremely important.

As the interviewer, I think I did well and represented Chatty Curator as a storyteller adequately (I hope).

An honest chat about the complacency within the LGBT+ Community. Click to open description

I’m so glad that William and I had the chance to unpack the issue within the LGBT+ community, and given we’re both cis males, that’s where we started. William speaks candidly about racism, transphobia, biphobia, ageism, and gatekeeping within supposedly community spaces, which is really worth a listen.

It’s so important that we respect the boundaries around each safe space, but we must also be mindful and actively reach out to one another and practice active allyship. Who knows what the future holds, so why not be there for one another?

“When in Doubt, Leave It Out” ethics and storytelling. Click to open description

One of the important things when it comes to a creative process (and any other processes, really) is nouance, the understanding of the subject matter. I’m so grateful to William for being so candid about writing and publishing a queer life story, and about the mental work behind the glitz of a book launch or a tour, e.g., making ethical decisions. It really shows the 11-year collaboration and friendship that led to this important LGBT+ documentation.
