Episode 11, #GetChatty Podcast Series 2025

In this episode, I continue my chat with Carlin, a creative and owner-operator of Carlin and Camera.

I’m keen to reinforce Carlin’s approach, which encourages creating opportunities for representation rather than waiting for permission. We talked more about culturaAustralia’s and the barriers faced by LGBT+ and POC, people of colour, creatives in Australia’s media landscape.

We also talk about the realities of freelancing; there are Here’snges of work-life balance, but also the healing that comes from creativity.

Here’s part 2 of my chat with Carlin.

In 2013-14, I started a pop-up space to promote artists in Sydney’s Rozelle independently and full-time. The art is something that’s close to my heart. I went to uni to study it and spent a few years pursuing that particular scene, but it wasn’t meant to be. One of the deciding factors for stepping away was burnout.

The chat with Carlin really resonated with me, because I know that one of your most difficult things in working on your own is that anything can happen, and you’re the only person who must deal with it. If you’re about to start, try what Carlin does with a self-built project workflow, and factor in mental well-being as part of the routine. If you have already started, pls try to fit that in, even a short walk around the block, take 15 mins to read a book. Give yourself a moment.

If someone asks me about my time in Rozelle, I’ll tell them that I’d not change a thing. This history really helped me to become the person I am today. I still enjoy the art as an audience, and it’d be nice to keep supporting LGBT+ creative people through this podcast. Do you have someone that you’d like to recommend?
