Julia’s career began as a youth worker, a sector where securing grants and tenders was vital for running programs; unknown to herself, she upped her skills in grant writing, eventually becoming a lead tender and grant writer for a government department.
In 2019, she took the big step to start her own business. Initially, she thought about social media and content marketing, but with encouragement from loved ones and trust in herself, she soon redirected her path. The business (Red Ink Words) is about helping mission-driven enterprises navigate the complex world of grants and tenders, ensuring they secure the funding needed to make things happen.

Julia operates Red Ink Words from her caravan, travelling across Australia. While challenging at times, this way of life offers unique opportunities to explore and work from diverse locations. It’s not always rainbows and sunshine, but Julia adapts her work schedule to her surroundings, making it work outside the conventional brick-and-mortar space.
I learned something new while chatting with Julia:
- Grants typically fund the achievement of specific outcomes, such as community development or environmental conservation. Tenders, on the other hand, are contracts for services or projects.
- Having a supportive network (even remotely) and conquering self-doubt were (and still are) very important to her when she took the bold step to plan her life and business outside the conventional way.
- She understood the need to explore the pros and cons and make informed decisions, whether in life or consulting clients. Expect it’s not always rainbows and sunshine, but taking a moment after the rain is always enjoyable.
