Episode 4, #GetChatty Podcast Series 2025

In this episode, I interview Carlin, an independent photographer and videographer who started full-time freelancing earlier this year.

Carlin shares his very non-linear path into the creative industries, including the challenges and freedoms of freelance life, as well as the emotional rollercoaster of self-employment. We also spoke openly about representation and diversity in Australian media. Although a lot of progress was made around the world in the 2010s, unfortunately, it has been taking steps back in recent years.

Please bear with us about this episode as we experienced a bit of tech difficulty, but I really think you can learn something from this, no matter who you are.

Thanks Carlin for sharing your journey, and I hope that those who’re looking into a career/side hustle in the creative industry, you can see our keenship to you and know that you’re not alone; and for people in small business spaces can learn a lot too:

  • Many of Carlin’s opportunities came through personal connections and referrals rather than traditional job applications, because word of mouth is key.
  • Instead of waiting for an offering, we can make the job. Why not start small, with a side hustle or a small project here or there, allowing room for the momentum to build and breathe?
  • When it comes to freelancing, it’s important to learn to embrace both the freedom and stress, find the joy and create a rhythm that suits you.
