Episode 02, #GetChatty About Your Local Businesses, Series 2024
Marissa is the owner-operator of The Candy Buffet Company, a unique and beautiful business specialising in candy buffets, doughnut walls, and grazing stations. Marissa’s entrepreneurship journey began unexpectedly, from a temporary job application to managing the company to eventually buying the business almost eight years ago.
And she is the very first guest on this podcast! My favourite marketing @CandyBuffetCo strategy is her business card – a chocolate bar wrapped with her contact information, which has proven highly effective in making memorable impressions! Marissa is also a good friend and ally of the LGBTQ+ community in the form of active participation, actively listening to and supporting LGBT+ clients’ needs.

And here’s my top 3 learnings from my interview with Marissa:
- Like many businesses, managing client expectations can be challenging; I like that Marissa emphasises guiding clients to make choices that reflect their event’s broader theme and vision.
- During the pandemic, she quickly pivoted from large-scale event services to delivering smaller packages to stay operational. Not only has it shown us how adapting to changing circumstances is crucial, but staying operational during the last big disruption provides her connection with confidence in the way she works and confidence that she will be able to deliver and stay on course.
- The origin story of the doughnut wall is evidence that when you work with your client to come up with a one-of-the-kind solution, it contributes to ongoing success.
